Countdown to Comet

Comet is a dog. A puppy, actually. As I write this, Comet is 6.5 weeks old.

He will move in with us (barring unforeseen disaster) in a couple of weeks. We’re getting him in hopes that maybe, just maybe, a dog in the home will be a benefit to our son, who has high-functioning Autism, among other challenges.

We are fortunate to have good friends, like Comet’s breeder Shannon, who also think this is a good idea. This is how Comet came to be in our lives. We wouldn’t know how to find a suitable dog, especially given our home, with it’s geriatric cats and yard full of chickens. But Shannon recognizes our needs and offered to help. Her help has come in the form of a ton of guidance, and a puppy that seems perfect for the job.

Comet was born in the early morning hours of September 21, 2015. A little lump of brown, black, and white fur.

He grew quickly. Within a week, he was clearly all dog.

It was during Comet’s second week, after examining tons of photos posted by Shannon, that Comet was given his name. My son thought it was fitting for Comet, given that Huskies enjoy the cold weather and can be seen streaking across the landscpe. (He has other reasons for the name too, but I always forget what they are!)

After two weeks, Comet was ready for visitors.

Another week, and Comet’s eyes and ears were open. Comet got to see the outside for the first time.

At five weeks, Comet (and his brother Mako) got to fully experience the outside for the first time.

Comet is definitely more laid back than his brother. More cautious. His brother on the other hand is going to be a big challenge when he grows up.

Meanwhile, we finally got to visit Comet again tonight. He’s now about 6.5 weeks old. Tonight he and his brother were exploring the kitchen!

Nevertheless we did manage to fit in some snuggles.

Comet needs to be at least 8 weeks old before he can leave his mother. So that means at least a couple more weeks before he moves in. It appears that we’ll be bringing a well mannered and perfectly trainable puppy into the house. His easy-going attitude is probably going to suit the cats just fine and the chickens… Well we’ll work on the chickens.

I find myself thinking a lot about Comet. So I drew a picture of him tonight.

You can expect to see more drawings and photos in the future!
